Unit 06

The Living World

600,000 NPC animations, a phone that is a physical object, and a world designed to interrupt you.

The headline number for GTA 6's world is an animation count, and it is worth sitting with for a second.

600k+ NPC animations in GTA 6
300k In Red Dead Redemption 2
55k In GTA 5
80 hrs Main story length

Crowds that were actually designed

The bigger change is not the count but the method. NPCs are individually art-directed instead of being generated purely by procedurally combining clothing and body parts. There is a much wider range of heights, weights and body types, and animations dynamically adjust to an NPC's size so characters interact more naturally with each other and the world.

  • You can greet, taunt, provoke or defuse NPCs directly.
  • NPCs notice when they are being listened to.
  • Some residents carry weapons and will start violence unprovoked.
  • Ambient conversations can develop into activities or unexpected open-world events.

Your body is a system too

From Rockstar's August 2026 Dazed cover story. Eating affects Jason and Lucia's weight and exercise visibly builds and tones muscle. The first time a GTA has done this since San Andreas in 2004. More interesting: going without sleep while you are evading the police is described as causing visible deterioration in their features.

  • Reported Rockstar has an office branch in Los Angeles working almost solely on the world's pedestrians
  • Confirmed Rob Nelson, Head of Development at Rockstar North, puts the project at roughly 13 years of work
  • Reported A stylist, Jillian Carr, worked on the game's clothing, Dazed calls it an in-game "fashion ecosystem"
  • Reported Food changes the characters' weight and exercise builds visible muscle
  • Reported Skipping sleep during a police pursuit visibly degrades their features
  • Rumour Jason and Lucia live independent off-screen lives the way GTA 5's trio did

That last line is on the list because a great many summaries of the Dazed interview reported it as fact. The piece does not say it. It says you can choose to play as a couple or separately, and it describes swapping between them mid-mission. Whether either character carries on a life of their own while off-screen is still unestablished.

The phone is a real object

The in-game phone is a physical object in the world rather than a HUD overlay. When you use it, the camera moves closer to the character's hand. Everything routes through it: Ryde Me for fast travel, WAINK for scanning cars, and social media.

  • Confirmed Snapmatic, the Instagram parody, returns
  • Confirmed Jason and Lucia cannot upload photos, because they are fugitives
  • Confirmed You can browse posts, follow accounts and observe conversations
  • Confirmed The game has the largest collection of radio and TV commercials in franchise history

Safehouses are camps, not menus

Jason and Lucia share the same safehouse. Rather than functioning as isolated player properties, these locations operate more like the lively camps of Red Dead Redemption 2, other characters come and go, some safehouses belong to someone else, and they have more usable features than the homes of earlier GTA games.

Everything you can do out there

The confirmed activity list is long and unusually varied:

  • Sports and physical: basketball, wrestling, boxing, pool, mini-golf, gym workouts, weightlifting.
  • Water: scuba diving, kayaking, fishing, parasailing.
  • Air and speed: parachuting, street racing (day and night), dirt bike racing.
  • Outdoors: hunting, wildlife examination with a checklist system, zoo visits.
  • Other: shooting range challenges, refuelling and repairing vehicles at gas stations.

A Focus mechanic can reveal nearby objects and other useful details. And the world is dense with optional encounters, one preview described a lawyer in a dumpster offering legal advice in exchange for pills.

Combat and missions

  • Enemies can be taken out non-lethally by shooting an arm or a leg.
  • Accurate shots can disarm enemies rather than kill them.
  • Particularly impressive acts of violence may trigger cinematic slow-motion camera angles.
  • Cover-based shooting with peek-and-shoot mechanics returns.
  • You can shoot from vehicle back seats, one demo showed a helicopter brought down that way.
  • Many missions offer real freedom in how you complete an objective. One sequence in a high-rise had several possible escape routes.
  • Police pursuits suggest effective routes but allow you to take alternates.

Story shape

The campaign runs roughly 80 hours including optional objectives with narrative consequences, making it the longest game Rockstar has released. It uses a chapter-based structure similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, and player choices range from minor decisions to major turning points. Rockstar has said it keeps the franchise's sharp comedy and social commentary while avoiding dated topical references.
