GTA 6: An Extended Look: everything the 26-minute reveal confirmed

Rockstar's Extended Look aired on Netflix on August 27, 2026. Here is every confirmed detail: the six-star wanted system, the Criminal Profile, an 80-hour story, and a map three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2.

On August 27, Rockstar aired GTA 6: An Extended Look, 26 minutes of gameplay captured entirely in-game on a PlayStation 5. It premiered on Netflix at 3pm ET, with a six-hour exclusivity window before hitting YouTube and Rockstar’s own site at 9pm ET.

It was the first sanctioned look at the game in over a year, and it confirmed more mechanical detail in one sitting than the previous two trailers combined. Here is what is now on the record.

The wanted system was rebuilt from scratch

This is the biggest change, and it deserves the top slot.

The six-star wanted level is back, reversing GTA 5’s decision to cap police heat at five. But the more important change is underneath: the police now work from evidence.

  • Officers are only alerted if an NPC witnesses the crime or a security system detects it.
  • Responding police are given a description, your face, your clothing, your vehicle.
  • Each piece of evidence is tracked separately and must be cleared separately.
  • Hollow stars on the meter mean police are searching but have no confirmed description of you.
  • After you escape, the area stays an active police zone while officers search.

To lose a description you have to actually change: a new hairstyle clears your physical description, a complete outfit change clears your clothing, sunglasses and a different hat explicitly are not enough, a discarded mask clears camera footage, and the identified getaway car has to go. Some vehicles carry GPS trackers that report their position to police automatically.

Jason and Lucia can also split up to divide police resources. One can be arrested while the other escapes.

The story is roughly 80 hours

Including optional objectives that carry narrative consequences, the campaign runs about 80 hours. The longest game Rockstar has released. It uses a chapter structure similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, and player choices range from small decisions to major turning points.

Rockstar also confirmed a development detail: they explored a version with four lead characters before settling on the criminal-couple structure.

The map is three times the size of RDR2

No exact measurements, but the figures from hands-on previews are consistent:

  • Roughly 3× larger than Red Dead Redemption 2’s world
  • Roughly 2× larger than GTA 5’s map
  • Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos
  • Nearly 11× more populated space than GTA 5

That last number is the meaningful one. The growth is in places with people in them, not empty countryside.

The Criminal Profile replaces Honor

Red Dead Redemption 2’s Honor system is gone, replaced by something called the Criminal Profile. Crucially it does not sort your actions into good and evil. It tracks patterns of behaviour, and those patterns influence how Leonida’s residents react to you and how parts of the story develop. Violence a mission requires does not automatically damage it, and completing crimes efficiently improves your reputation.

Money gates the story

Rockstar confirmed that players may need to raise a specific amount of cash before parts of the main story will advance. Combined with the new robbery systems, that makes crime the pacing mechanism of the campaign rather than optional side content.

Robberies now hinge on a single tension: escape fast, or steal as much as possible. Safes can be blown open quickly at the cost of damaging what is inside, or cracked slowly with the combination to keep the haul intact. Police can surround a building and simply wait. Most locations have a second exit.

Stolen goods go through specialised fences, and vehicle fences provide intel on valuable cars sitting in police impounds.

Stealing a car is now a skill check

Vehicles have security tiers. Older cars open with a slim jim; modern luxury cars may need key-cloning tools. A phone app called WAINK scans a vehicle and reports its estimated value, registration cost, lock status, alarm and tracking status. Damage reduces resale value.

Cars also have physical trunks for storing weapons and spare outfits, which is how the wanted system and the economy connect. Your getaway car carries the clean clothes that clear your description.

The bottomless weapon wheel is gone: two rifles and two pistols, with everything else in a trunk or at a safehouse.

The world has 600,000 NPC animations

For scale: GTA 5 had 55,000 and Red Dead Redemption 2 had 300,000.

More significant than the count is the method, NPCs are individually art-directed rather than procedurally assembled from clothing and body parts, with a much wider range of heights, weights and body types, and animations that adjust to an NPC’s size.

You can greet, taunt, provoke or defuse them. They notice when they are being listened to. Some carry weapons and start violence unprovoked. And ambient conversations can develop into activities or unexpected open-world events.

The phone is a physical object

Not a HUD overlay, the camera moves closer to the character’s hand when you use it. Snapmatic returns, but Jason and Lucia cannot post, because they are fugitives. They can browse, follow and observe only.

Rockstar also says the game has the largest collection of radio and TV commercials in franchise history.

The relationship is a system

You decide whether Jason and Lucia become romantic or stay purely partners in crime. The bond builds through shared activities, working out, shopping, sightseeing, committing crimes, and repeatedly dismissing your partner’s texts can damage it.

Both protagonists physically change based on how you play them: weight from food, muscle from exercise, condition lost through disrupted sleep.

What was not confirmed

Two things reported from previews that Rockstar has not officially stated:

  • The base PS5 version reportedly runs at 30fps. A PS5 Pro performance mode has not been confirmed.
  • First-person mode reportedly will not be included at launch.

Treat both as reported, not confirmed. And there is still no word of any kind on a multiplayer or online component.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
