Rockstar breaks silence on the GTA 6 leaks: "heartbreaking for our team"

On 26 August, a day before the Extended Look aired, Rockstar did something it almost never does: it commented on a leak.

Extended clips of GTA 6 had been circulating on social media for days. Rockstar’s statement described the situation as “heartbreaking for our team” and said this was “not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.”

Three things in that statement matter, and only one of them got the headlines.

1. Rockstar confirmed the clips are real

This is the significant part. Until 26 August, the leaked footage was unverified, plausible, but unverified. Rockstar has now publicly acknowledged, for the first time, that the material is legitimate.

That changes how you should treat it, but not in the direction most people assume. It does not make the leaks a good source. It makes them a confirmed-genuine source of unfinished material, which is a different and more dangerous thing.

2. They may contain spoilers

Rockstar explicitly warned the leaked clips may include spoilers.

If you are trying to arrive at 19 November unspoiled, the leaks are now the single biggest threat to that, and they are being reposted with thumbnails designed to make you click. This is worth knowing before you go looking.

3. The game is nearly finished

Buried under the drama, this is the most useful line for anyone worried about a third delay. Rockstar said GTA 6 is nearly complete. They also apologised for how long they have kept official footage and detail under wraps.

Read alongside the Extended Look landing the very next day, and physical copies already dated for 12 November, that reads like a studio confident in its date.

Why the leaker did it

The person behind the clips claimed it was a protest against anti-consumer practices in the games industry, and specifically against Rockstar’s decision to sell the physical edition of GTA 6 as a download code in a box rather than a disc.

They also promoted a memecoin in the clips, which rather undercuts the principled framing.

The disc complaint is not invented, though. It is real, it is confirmed, and it is the thing most likely to affect you personally. Here is what the physical edition actually gets you.

Our position on the leaked footage

We have not used it and will not. Nothing on this site comes from those clips.

Two reasons, and neither is squeamishness. A leaked development build is not a shipping game, material in it may not survive to launch, so reporting it as fact is simply inaccurate. And Rockstar is actively issuing DMCA takedowns against sites hosting the material, including the full Leonida map that came out of the same breach.

Everything here comes from official trailers, Rockstar’s own media pages, and hands-on press coverage. That is slower and it is shorter. It is also the reason you can trust the labels.

Update, 31 August 2026. Take-Two has moved from statements to court filings: a federal court has granted DMCA subpoenas against Microsoft and Discord, with a 4 September compliance deadline.
