Will GTA 6 have roleplay servers? What Rockstar has and has not said
Rockstar has announced nothing about roleplay in GTA 6. But it now owns FiveM, it is officially backing nopixel V, and there is one hard technical blocker almost nobody mentions. Here is the honest state of it.

Short answer: Rockstar has announced nothing about roleplay in GTA 6. No server support, no modding tools, no policy, no timeline. Anyone giving you a date is making it up.
That is the honest headline, and if it is all you came for you can stop reading. But the longer answer is genuinely interesting, because the pieces around GTA 6 have moved a lot in the last three years, and there is one practical obstacle that most discussion of this skips entirely.
First, two facts about GTA 6 that decide most of this
GTA 6 ships without any multiplayer. Rockstar has described it as a single player experience. There is no online mode on 19 November 2026, and nothing has been announced about one. We covered that in full in GTA 6 has no multiplayer at launch.
GTA 6 has no PC version. It launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There is no PC release date, no announced window, and no PC pre orders, which we went through in GTA 6 on PC.
Hold on to that second one. It matters more than anything else on this page.
What GTA roleplay actually is, and where it runs
GTA roleplay turns GTA V into a community run version of Los Santos where players invent a character and stay in it: paramedics, mechanics, criminals, and a player staffed police force keeping order. Rockstar’s own description calls it a world where every player helps shape the city.
Here is the part that decides the GTA 6 question. All of it runs on PC. Roleplay servers are built on FiveM, a modification framework that exists only for the PC version of GTA V. There has never been a console roleplay server, because consoles do not let you load custom code into a retail game.
So the requirement is not just Rockstar’s blessing. A GTA 6 roleplay scene cannot exist until GTA 6 exists on PC. With no PC version announced, and Rockstar’s last two games taking between one and two years to reach PC, that alone pushes any realistic roleplay scene well past launch.
Why people think it is coming anyway
Because Rockstar’s direction of travel is hard to miss.
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| Before 2023 | Roleplay tolerated rather than endorsed, with periodic worry about shutdowns |
| August 2023 | Rockstar acquires Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, and expands its mod policy to cover the roleplay community |
| September 2026 | Rockstar officially announces nopixel V, distributed through the Rockstar Games Launcher |
Read as a sequence, that is a company that went from tolerating roleplay, to owning the technology underneath it, to shipping a roleplay server through its own launcher. Rockstar now employs the people who would build the GTA 6 equivalent.
That is a real and meaningful pattern. It is still not an announcement, and it is worth keeping those apart.
What Rockstar has pointedly not said
When Cfx.re joined Rockstar in 2023, the team publicly asked people not to ask them about the next GTA. Three years on, that silence has held. The nopixel V announcement, published on 1 September 2026, does not mention GTA 6 anywhere.
For a company eleven weeks from its biggest launch ever, choosing not to connect those two things is a choice, not an oversight.
The honest verdict
Our read, clearly labelled as a read and not as reporting:
Likely eventually, almost certainly not soon. The ownership, the tooling and the stated goodwill are all now in place, which is more than could be said at any point in GTA V’s life. But roleplay needs a PC release that has not been announced, and modding tools that have not been announced, for a game that does not yet have an online mode that has not been announced either.
Three unannounced things have to happen in order. That is why we are not putting a date on it, and why you should be sceptical of anyone who does.
What to watch for
These are the actual signals, in the order they would have to appear:
- A GTA 6 PC announcement. Nothing can start before this.
- A stated mod policy for GTA 6. Rockstar published one for GTA V roleplay in 2023. A GTA 6 equivalent would be the clearest possible green light.
- Cfx.re shipping anything GTA 6 shaped. The team is inside Rockstar now, so their output is the tell.
- Whether nopixel V’s launcher distribution becomes a template. If other servers follow, it is a platform. If it stays one server, it was a partnership.
We will update this page as those land, and we will date every change. Until then, the answer to the question in the headline is that nobody outside Rockstar knows, including us.
