Rockstar's developers gave their biggest interview in years: here is what is actually new in it
Rockstar's Rob Nelson says GTA 6 has been in development roughly 13 years. The Dazed cover story also brings the first word on food and exercise changing your body, sleep deprivation showing on your face, and an entire office branch dedicated to pedestrians.

Rockstar does not do interviews. That is the first thing worth saying about the Dazed cover story published on 26 August, the day before the Extended Look aired: five named Rockstar developers went on the record about GTA 6, which for this studio is close to unprecedented.
It runs in the Autumn 2026 issue, on sale internationally from 10 September. The online piece is out now, and there is real new information in it, mixed in with a lot that we already knew.
Below is only the new part, split the way this site always splits things: what a Rockstar employee actually said, and what the magazine’s writer described. Those are not the same thing, and almost every summary of this interview has blurred them.
Who spoke
| Name | Role, as given by Dazed |
|---|---|
| Rob Nelson | Head of development and co-studio head, Rockstar North |
| Rupert Humphries | Senior vice president of narrative |
| Jamie-Lee Lloyd | Senior art director for characters |
| Stu Petri | Vice president of 2D/UI design |
| Michael Wiafe | Game writer |
Stylist Jillian Carr also features. She is not described as Rockstar staff, and we have not assumed she is.
What Rockstar staff said directly
GTA 6 has been in development for roughly 13 years. Rob Nelson puts the work at “roughly the same amount of time” as has passed since GTA V shipped in 2013. This is the first time a senior Rockstar figure has put a number on it, and it reframes the delays: this is not a game that slipped from a 2025 plan. It is a game that has been running almost as long as GTA V has been on sale.
On the pressure. Nelson: “I don’t know that any amount of external pressure could compare with the pressure we put on ourselves.”
On how they decide what to change. Nelson describes looking back at previous Rockstar games “with a critical eye” to see where to evolve “based on what we didn’t do as well.” That is a more interesting sentence than it looks. It is a studio saying its own back catalogue is the benchmark it is trying to beat, not the competition’s.
On the research behind the characters. Rupert Humphries says the narrative team met ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters and gun dealers while developing the cast.
What the magazine describes
These next items come from the writer rather than from a quoted developer. They are almost certainly accurate (Dazed was briefed by the studio), but they are a journalist’s characterisation of what they were shown, not a Rockstar statement, and we label them accordingly.
Food and exercise change your body. Eating affects Jason and Lucia’s weight; exercising visibly builds and tones muscle. San Andreas did a version of this in 2004 and no GTA has done it since.
Going without sleep shows on your face. This is the detail worth the whole article. According to the piece, neglecting sleep while you are evading the police causes visible deterioration in the characters’ features.
Sit with what that implies. The wanted system is already built around a physical description of you, which is why changing your hair or your clothes is a confirmed way to shake it, and why a salon is a piece of gameplay rather than scenery. Unit 04 covers the wanted system properly. If a long police pursuit visibly changes your face, then the game is tracking your condition and your appearance as connected systems rather than as separate cosmetic sliders.
The city reacts to what you are carrying. “Walk down the street with a rifle, and the city will have something to say about it.” Again, this is the writer’s line rather than a developer quote, but it is consistent with everything Rockstar has confirmed about NPCs reacting to you rather than ignoring you.
There is an office branch dedicated almost solely to pedestrians. Rockstar has a Los Angeles branch working essentially only on the world’s NPCs. Set that against the confirmed headline number, 600,000+ NPC animations, against 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2 and 55,000 in GTA 5, and the staffing decision starts to look like the explanation for the number. Unit 06 has the full living-world picture.
Clothing is a designed system, not a wardrobe menu. Stylist Jillian Carr built what the piece calls an in-game “fashion ecosystem” meant to convey taste, lifestyle, affluence and individuality. That a stylist was brought in to design how clothing signals taste, money and identity is new information.
You are not obliged to play as a couple. The piece describes players choosing to play as a couple or to “go off and cause chaos independently,” and mentions swapping between the two mid- mission, one driving while the other shoots from the passenger seat.
One thing to be careful about
A lot of coverage of this interview has reported that Jason and Lucia live their own independent lives while you are not controlling them, the way Franklin, Michael and Trevor did in GTA 5.
The Dazed piece does not actually say that. It says you can choose to play as a couple or separately, and it describes in-mission switching. Whether either character carries on with a life of their own while off-screen is not established by this interview, and we are not going to report it as though it is.
What this does not change
No release-date news, no install size, no PC version. Launch is still 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The launch-week checklist is here.
Where our labels come from: a named Rockstar employee saying something on the record is confirmed. A journalist’s description of a briefing is reported. We do not merge the two just because they appeared in the same article. How we source things.
