Which GTA 6 edition should you buy? An honest look at the $20 difference
GTA 6 comes in two editions: Standard at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99. Both get the same pre-order bonus. Here is what the extra $20 actually buys, and why there is no reason to rush.
Two editions, and a decision that is simpler than most sites make it look.

The two things most people get wrong
1. The pre-order bonus is not exclusive to Ultimate. The Vintage Vice City Pack comes with both editions. If you have seen it listed as an Ultimate perk, that is wrong.
2. The bonus does not expire before launch. You qualify as long as you pre-order before November 20, 2026, which is the day after the game comes out. There is no deadline pressure here at all, whatever a countdown timer on a retailer page is implying.
Put those together and the urgency that normally drives pre-order decisions simply does not exist for this game.
So what does the extra $20 buy?
Exclusive premium vehicles, weapons and apparel. Rockstar has not published an item-by-item list.
That is the honest state of it, and it means nobody, including us, can tell you whether the Ultimate Edition is good value. Anyone confidently declaring it “worth it” or “a rip-off” right now is filling space.
What we can say is how this content has historically behaved. In previous Rockstar releases, edition-exclusive vehicles and apparel have been cosmetic or early-access advantages rather than content you would otherwise miss permanently. Nothing suggests the Ultimate Edition contains missions, map areas or story.
Our actual advice
If you are not sure: buy Standard, or wait.
You are getting an 80-hour single-player campaign either way. The bonus is identical. Waiting until Rockstar details the Ultimate contents, or until launch reviews describe them, costs you nothing but a few weeks, and by then you will know what you are buying instead of guessing.
If you already know you want everything: Ultimate is a $20 premium on an $80 game for cosmetics. That is a reasonable price for someone who is going to put 80 hours in and wants the extra toys on day one. It is not a trap. It is just not measurable yet.
Two things added on 31 August
You do not have to decide now. PlayStation lists an Ultimate Edition Upgrade as a separate product, so you can buy Standard today and upgrade later if the Ultimate contents turn out to be worth it. That removes most of the reason to agonise.
The free GTA+ month auto-renews. Both editions include one month of GTA+ with a digital pre-order. PlayStation’s listing says plainly that it auto-renews, so it turns into a paid subscription unless you cancel it. It is also the membership for GTA Online, a mode GTA 6 does not have at launch. What about a physical copy, or a collector’s edition?
There is a boxed version, but there is no disc in it. The retail box contains a one-time download code and reaches shops on 12 November. Digital pre-orders begin pre-loading that same day, so the box gets you no head start, buy it only if you want something physical on a shelf. The full explanation is here.
A collector’s edition is a different thing, and there isn’t one. Rockstar has confirmed no physical collector’s edition at launch, despite a long run of speculation about a statue bundle at around $230.
If you see one advertised, it is not official. Be careful: high-demand launches attract listings for products that do not exist.
Where to pre-order
Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026 at the Rockstar Store, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and major retailers including Amazon and GameStop.
Whichever you buy, you end up with a digital download, the boxed copy is a code, so there is no meaningful difference between storefronts beyond payment method and any regional pricing. Buy wherever you normally buy, and note that a digital pre-order can be cancelled and refunded up until release on most platforms, which is another reason not to agonise over the decision now.
One last thing worth repeating
There is no multiplayer at launch. Neither edition includes online content, because there is no online mode. If any part of your reasoning for the Ultimate Edition is “the extras will be useful in GTA 6 Online”, there is currently nothing to base that on, here is what Rockstar has actually said.
