Confirmed Launch guide

GTA 6 day one: how to actually be ready for 19 November

Launch is 19 November 2026. Digital pre-load opens November 12. Here is how much storage to clear, why the boxed copy buys you no head start, and the things people will get wrong on day one.

There is still plenty of time before launch, which is exactly the right amount of time to do the boring parts badly. This is the list of things genuinely worth doing before 19 November 2026, with a clear line drawn between what Rockstar has confirmed and what everyone is assuming. The live countdown and a checklist that saves itself are on the launch-week page.

That last row is the whole article, really.

The boxed copy buys you nothing on timing

The physical edition contains a one-time download code. No disc. We wrote that up in full here.

Correction, 31 August 2026: this section previously said the box was worth buying for a seven-day head start on the download. That was based on our own error. We had this site saying the digital pre-load date was unannounced, when Rockstar confirmed it back in June.

Digital pre-orders begin pre-loading on 12 November, the same day the boxes reach shops. There is no head start. Buy the box if you want a physical object; do not buy it to download sooner. The full correction is here.

Clear the storage now, not on the night

Rockstar has not announced the install size. Anyone giving you a precise figure is guessing.

What we can say honestly is where the series has been: GTA V ran past 90 GB with updates, and Red Dead Redemption 2 landed at roughly 150 GB. GTA 6 is a substantially larger world than either.

Sensible plan: have 150 GB free, and prefer 200 GB. Deleting a game you have finished takes two minutes today and is deeply annoying at midnight on launch night when the download stalls at 94%.

While you are in there: if your console is running an external drive, remember that PS5 and Xbox Series consoles will not run a current-gen game from external USB storage. It has to be on the internal SSD or an official expansion card.

Do not wait for your friends

There is no multiplayer at launch. Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 ships as a single-player game, with online to follow later.

This catches people out every launch. There is no lobby to organise, no crew to form, no reason to take the same day off as everyone you play with. Buy it when it suits you. The full state of the online question is Unit 07.

A pre-order is refundable; a panic is not

Digital pre-orders can generally be cancelled and refunded up to release on both PlayStation and Xbox. That means there is no deadline pressure to choose between Standard at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99 today.

The pre-order bonus is the same on both. The extra $20 buys six named vehicles, engraved variants of pistols you already get, and exclusive apparel and customisation options at shops across the map, no extra missions or map. We read the contents off Rockstar’s own press bundle here. Here is the honest comparison.

Three things worth knowing before you start playing

Not preparation exactly, but the difference between a good first evening and a frustrating one.

The police work from evidence now. Six stars are back, but the wanted system has been rebuilt around a physical description of you. Witnesses matter. Changing your hairstyle, your outfit or your vehicle is a confirmed way to break the description, which is why a salon is a piece of gameplay and not scenery. Unit 04 covers this properly.

Stolen cars have to be moved through fences, and vehicles have security tiers. The car you can break into is not the car that is worth taking. Unit 05.

The story can gate progress behind money. This is not a game where you can ignore the economy until you feel like it.

What not to believe between now and launch

Two things will happen a lot between now and launch.

The first is tracklists. Long lists of “confirmed” GTA 6 songs will circulate, naming very large artists. Almost all of it is datamined or invented. No official tracklist exists. The songs that genuinely play over official footage are here.

The second is maps. A leaked map from a stolen development build is doing the rounds. We will not publish it. It is not a public asset and Rockstar is actively having it taken down. More to the point, a map from an old internal build is not a reliable guide to the game you will buy. What Rockstar has actually shown of Leonida is here.

We will update this page when Rockstar publishes the install size, which usually lands in the weeks before release. Pre-load timing is now known: 12 November, for digital pre-orders and boxed codes alike.
